Most of Southport's new leases are one- and two-bedroom units
In the September quarter, 538 of Southport’s 979 new bonds were for one- and two-bedroom units. Gold Coast University Hospital, Gold Coast Private Hospital, Griffith University’s Gold Coast campus and a TAFE campus bring people here to work and study, and nearly one resident in ten was at university in 2021. A student or a new hospital worker may have little rental history to check. Every rental application is reviewed in detail and checked for accuracy: identity, references and tenancy databases, following Queensland’s legislation. If we wouldn’t put them in our own home, we won’t put them in yours.

What new Southport tenancies were signed at last quarter

Two- and four-bedroom houses are left out: their medians have moved by $100 or more between quarters. The figure for all homes is left out too: it swings too much to rely on. 234 of 979 new bonds were in the RTA’s ‘other’ group, which has no published median.

Living in Southport
Southport was named in 1875 as the colony's southernmost port
Southport was surveyed as a settlement in 1874 and named the next year, because it was the southernmost port of the colony; before that, the area was Nerang Creek Heads. In 2013 its business area was declared a priority development area, which created the Gold Coast’s central business district. The former Southport Town Hall on Nerang Street, the Southport Bathing Pavilion and the Southport Sea Wall are heritage listed.
Southport Broadwater Parklands opened in 2009, was expanded in 2013 and 2016, and holds the Southport Pier, the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre and the war memorial. Gold Coast University Hospital opened in 2013 beside Griffith University’s Gold Coast campus, with Gold Coast Private Hospital next to it. Australia Fair shopping centre, Southport Golf Club and Southport Library are here too.

Schools
Keebra Park and Southport State High Schools share Southport's catchment
State primary schools: about half of the suburb is in the Southport State School catchment, and the rest is split between the Musgrave Hill, Bellevue Park and Ashmore State School catchments.
State secondary schools: Keebra Park and Southport State High Schools share the suburb for Years 7 to 12. The selective Queensland Academy for Health Sciences and Southport Special School are here too.
Non-state schools in Southport include The Southport School (boys) and St Hilda’s School (girls), both Anglican and Prep to Year 12. Aquinas College (Catholic, Years 7 to 12) is on Edmund Rice Drive, which the school lists as Ashmore. Nearby: Trinity Lutheran College in Ashmore, St Kevin’s in Benowa and Emmanuel College in Carrara.
Catchments change, and the boundary follows streets, not suburbs. Check any address on the Queensland Government’s school catchment map before you rely on it.
Getting around
Southport has seven light rail stations and no train line
Southport’s railway, the South Coast line, closed in 1964. Seven G:link stations are inside the suburb: Gold Coast University Hospital, Griffith University, Queen Street, Nerang Street, Southport, Southport South and Broadwater Parklands. Trams run north to Helensvale and, since Stage 3 opened on 9 August 2026, south through Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach to Burleigh Heads. The Southport Mall area has the Gold Coast’s major northern bus interchange. By road and without traffic, Surfers Paradise is about 8 minutes away (4.7 km), Gold Coast Airport about 34 minutes (30.3 km) and Brisbane’s CBD about 59 minutes (73.4 km).

Four things a Southport owner can look up
- Flood levels: the City of Gold Coast’s Flood level search gives the designated flood level for a property. The council notes it covers riverine flooding only, not local flash flooding.
- Waterfront: the council’s Mapping search covers building setback requirements for waterfront properties and coastal erosion.
- Units in tall buildings: 3,076 of Southport’s 8,437 units are in blocks of nine storeys or more.
- Light rail north: the council’s City Transport Strategy 2031 proposes a light rail extension from Gold Coast University Hospital to Biggera Waters. The council’s page gives no timetable.
